La Crosse Technology WS-9160U-IT-CBP Review

La Crosse Technology WS-9160U-IT Digital Thermometer is a wonderful new thermometer that features Indoor/Outdoor Temperature in a new sleek easy to ready case.

Transmits outside temperature up to 330 feet, the wireless thermometer works extremely well and is easy to set up – but you absolutely must follow the directions exactly.

Range is excellent but you need to just make sure that some large object such as a metal shed or a large oak tree is not in line-of-sight between any of the transmitters and the receiver.

WS-9160U-IT-CBP thermometer system includes an indoor display console and a remote wireless temperature sensor, though the console can receive temps from up to Three (03) sensors.

Please be advised that if you collect a display unit that receives transmissions at 915 MHz, then you absolutely must buy sensors that also transmit at 915 MHz. Several of the sensors that are sold by Amazon look alike, but they are not all of them use 915 MHz, so carefully read the tech specs to make sure that both the transmitter and the receiver operate at 915 MHz.

As a side note, I was getting ready to install the remote sensor on my balcony when I accidentally dropped it four stories. It took the hit like a real trooper and works perfectly!

Pros:

  • The readout is big and clear, the size of the display is large enough for easy viewing so that’s a plus.
  • It requires little knowledge to set it up correctly. Just follow the included instructions and you’ll be up and running in 5 minutes.
  • I also like the silver coloring. It has min and max temperature memory, which I like. The only thing I wish it had is a humidity reading. Good thermometer overall.
  • Also it can be used for multi zone temps, with additional sensors.

Cons:

  • This display panel should be back-lit for better viewing under different lighting circumstances. We have a dimmer in living room and can barely make out the temp without adjusting the dimmer to a brighter setting.

Accuracy is bit questionable. Very high and very low temperatures mostly are not being reported accurately by this device. The outdoor thermometer reads about 2 degrees lower than the indoor one.

But for an inexpensive unit like this I would expect errors on the order of 1-2 degrees F. That is plenty accurate to decide whether to open the windows or go outside. That is what I wanted it for.
